For many individuals, being told that they need oral surgery to address a dental issue can provoke anxiety and fear. At Ramona Family Dentistry, Dr. Sean Feely understands this and wants every patient to know that oral surgery is not as painful or scary as what they may have been led to believe. The trusted dentist stays abreast of the latest techniques and technology in order to make oral surgery, whether it is for dental implants or tooth extraction, as safe, gentle and comfortable as possible.
Here, our dentist explains why you shouldn’t fear oral surgery.
MODERN ORAL SURGERY IS PRECISE AND ACCURATE
Modern diagnostic and planning tools and equipment like intraoral cameras and digital imaging make the planning and execution of oral surgeries more accurate and precise than ever before. For instance, oral surgeries that involve dental implants use digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to map out the precise placement of the implant as well as other details of the procedure. Complications from oral surgery are rare thanks to the advanced dental tools and techniques used today.
SEDATION DENTISTRY MAKE ORAL SURGERY COMFORTABLE AND VIRTUALLY PAIN-FREE
Prior to oral surgery, a local or general anesthetic is used to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Most patients report feeling little to very little pain during oral surgery thanks to anesthesia. Patients under general anesthesia are asleep during their procedure while patients under local anesthesia remain awake. The type of anesthesia used depends on the extent of surgery being done.
Should you feel anxious about having oral surgery and want to remain awake during your procedure, oral sedation medication is available to help put you at ease. Oral sedation does not alleviate pain but it does put nervous and fearful patients in a relaxed, “dream-like” state during dental work. With oral sedation, patients remain conscious and are able to respond to the dentist’s instructions and questions. Afterwards, patients have little, if any, recollection of their oral surgery procedure. Oral sedation and local anesthesia can be used to alleviate discomfort and anxiety during oral surgery.
RECOVERY IS MINIMAL
Thanks to the precision and accuracy of oral surgery, recovery is shorter than in previous years. Today’s dental tools and instruments used for tooth extractions and dental implant surgeries disrupt less of the surrounding tissue, allowing for faster healing, less risk of complications and a smoother overall recovery. Oral pain medication may be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort you may feel during recovery.
