Veneers Q & A

Porcelain veneers are custom, tooth-shaped shells made from a durable porcelain material. When bonded to the surface of the teeth, porcelain veneers provide the most natural-appearing tooth enhancement. Porcelain veneers can be used to address issues like:

  • Stained teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Malformed teeth
  • Fractured or cracked teeth
  • Gaps

Porcelain is the most popular material used for veneers because of its natural appearance and durability. Porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years with the right care.

How are porcelain veneers made?

Porcelain veneers are custom made from impressions of your teeth. Your veneers are made in an off-site dental lab, typically within two to four weeks. The porcelain veneers used at Ramona Family Dentistry are ultra-thin and color-matched to the rest of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are designed to feel and look like natural teeth, allowing you to eat and speak with confidence. Once the dental lab delivers your veneers, you return to the office to have them permanently cemented into place.

How are veneers placed?

Placement of porcelain veneers happens in two stages. The first stage is the preparation stage, during which your dentist removes a small portion of your tooth enamel to make room for the veneer. The procedure is typically performed without anesthesia, but your dentist can administer a local anesthetic to prevent any pain or discomfort. After the teeth are prepped, the team takes impressions of your smile and sends them off to the lab. While you wait for your veneer to be delivered from the dental lab, a temporary veneer may be placed to help maintain your appearance.

The second stage is the actual placement of the veneer. After removing the temporary veneer, your dentist places the custom-made porcelain veneer over your tooth and makes final adjustments to ensure a perfect fit. Your dentist then applies an adhesive and uses a specialized light to permanently bond the veneer to the surface of your tooth.

Porcelain veneers need to be maintained just like your natural teeth. To get the longest usage from your veneers, you should be sure to practice good oral hygiene and schedule regular visits with your dentist. With the right care, porcelain veneers provide you with a long-lasting, beautiful smile.
