Dental Bridges Q & A

What are dental bridges?

Dental bridges consist of metal frames with replacement teeth attached. Drs. Christensen and Sachdeva cement these oral appliances to either your natural teeth or implants surrounding the space or decayed teeth. Ramona Family Dentistry offers dental bridges to address several issues, including:

  • Missing teeth
  • Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
  • Speech issues
  • Shifting teeth
  • Jaw pain and headaches attributed to a bad bite

Dental bridges remain fixed in your mouth without shifting out of place, making it easier to restore your healthy bite and give you a full, natural-looking smile.

What are the different types of dental bridges?

Ramona Family Dentistry offers three types of dental bridges.

Traditional dental bridges

Strong enough to replace molars, Drs. Christensen and Sachdeva remove the enamel and use crowns to permanently secure the most popular type of dental bridge to adjacent teeth.

Maryland-bonded bridge

Typically used to replace front teeth, Drs. Christensen and Sachdeva permanently fix a Maryland bridge by fusing metal framework to your surrounding teeth without removing any enamel.

Cantilever bridge

Although similar to traditional dental bridges, Cantilever bridges enable Drs. Christensen and Sachdeva to secure a bridge on only one side.

The type of dental bridge you receive depends on the issue you have.

What does the dental bridge process entail?

Regardless of the type of dental bridge you receive, the process begins with Drs. Christensen and Sachdeva recontouring the teeth surrounding the area of placement. To ensure proper positioning and optimal comfort, they create an impression of your bite.

Ramona Family Dentistry uses an in-office milling machine known as the CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics). CEREC uses a digital camera and computer to create tooth restorations in the dental office. Instead of having to send the impression to a dental lab, a process that often involves weeks of waiting and multiple office visits, CEREC enables Drs. Christensen and Sachdeva to place your bridge in one visit.

Once your dental bridge gets placed, Drs. Christensen and Sachdeva check your bite for a comfortable and correct fit and use dental cement to hold your bridge firmly in place.
